KUHUSU SISI \\ ABOUT US

The Ameru dream started with 100 coffee trees on our family farm in Kenya, which grew to a plantation of 4 acres and is now one of the many sourcing plantations for our distinct set of coffee bean varieties. Established in 2014, Ameru Coffee was the vision of founder Abdallah Ndwala, who wanted to share the vibrant nature of his culture with the world.

Abdallah is calling Australia home since 2001 but maintaining a connection to his roots back in Africa has always been an aspiration very close to his heart and the high quality coffee produced in his home country turned out to be the natural link between both countries.

Abdallah was born in Meru, a town in Kenya that forms a municipal council with a population of 240,900 residents on the north-east slopes of Mount Kenya about 8km north of the equator. The climatic conditions and high altitudes make the region an ideal location for the cultivation and production of coffee. Ameru is the culture and the people in and around Meru and the inspiration for our brand name.

Our aim is to bring our customers and clients the finest African coffee direct from the source while leaving a positive impact on the local communities in Kenya as well as Australia. Our vision is to be a connector between different parts of the world, an inspiration to those facing hardship and a place for appreciation to our customers.

KAZI YETU \\ OUR MISSION

Approximately 65% of Kenyan coffee is being produced by smallholder farmers, who often face economic disadvantage resulting from a lack of empowerment, insufficient education and intimidating licensing requirements.

Operating in a ‘crop-to-cup’ system means we engage in direct trades with the coffee producers in Kenya, allowing us best access to premium quality coffee and giving us the opportunity to directly impact and support the livelihood of the local farmers.

It also provides us with a unique perspective and insight into the challenges that the growers face in order to produce consistently high-quality coffee. Our vision is to be a connector between different parts of the world, an inspiration to those facing hardship and a place for appreciation to our customers.

We reach out to improve and transform lives equally for people at the origin of our coffee as well as those at its destination. Our dedicated team works with ambition and commitment to always provide quality service and sell a premium product with a purpose.

Although coffee is said to have been originally discovered by goatherds in Ethiopia, Kenya has become one of the world’s most sought-after coffee producing origins, providing the world markets with consistent premium quality Arabica coffee, rich and unique in its flavours and aroma profiles. Kenyan factories have been ranked among the world’s best specialty coffee producers.

Growing on rich volcanic soil at 1600 – 1900 meters above the sea level, coffee beans produced in Kenya are known for their special characteristics and premium quality due to the unique climatic conditions they are cultivated in. The acidic soil in Kenya is of great depth and fertility, ensuring good drainage and giving our beans their distinct global identity.

Being the second most traded commodity in the world next to oil, coffee also plays a major role in strengthening Kenya’s position in the world economy.

In a country where 70% of the population is either directly or indirectly employed in the agricultural sector, coffee production and processing presents a major source of income and employment for many Kenyans and is becoming increasingly important for the country’s economic development.

SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY

At AMERU we strongly believe that what we do, has to benefit the communities we serve and interact with. As a business, we have a valuable platform available to us and we see it as our responsibility to make positive contributions to our society and the world at large.

Supporting our coffee farmers and educating others about their challenges has always been the main driver behind the creation and work of Ameru Coffee but the more people we meet along the way, the more great causes we come across that we happily support.

Whether it is serving coffee at neighbourhood markets, participating in the local river clean up, offering free coffee cupping sessions to educate our community, co-sponsoring fundraising events or inviting the local fire brigade for a cup of coffee – opportunities to help out are endless and each of them is as rewarding to us, as a business and individuals, as it is to the people in need.

Our actions as a business need to align with our mission to empower, support and connect the people around us because if the community benefits, we all benefit.
